10.8 THE SNAGOV MONASTERY AND DRACULAS GRAVE

«Tour description»

Today we start the excursion to the lake, forest, Leisure Park and natural protected area, Snagov, which is situated about 30Km away from Bucharest. Snagov is protected by the Vlasiei forests with huge oak trees and groups of hornbeams and lime trees, on the 16 km long lake banks, during the time many events took place, wrapped in mystery. Snagov has been during history a place of refuge, of treasuries, of isolation / prison, of rest, reshaping and relaxation. As much as it has been possible, the spies and the curious eyes have been kept away from it.

After we have left Bucharest behind, we arrive in Snagov village, which was attested for the first time in XIVth century. A boat is waiting to lead us to the mysterious Island of Snagov. During the boat trip we have the chance to admire the beauty of the lake and ancient forests. On board we enjoy a glass of Romanian red wine and mineral water. Once we step on the Island we discover the Monastery from the XIVth century, which has been an important cultural centre for Valachia in medieval times and which hosted huge cultural riches, but being also at the same time prison and torture place. One of the most mysterious and cruel characters of the European History, the leader of Wallachia, Vlad Tepes, known world wide as Vampire Dracula is buried on this Island.

After crossing the lake again by boat, back to our coach we drive to Bucharest, towards the Restaurant Monte Carlo, situated right in the city center. After lunch drive back to Bucharest.
